2K Sports’ “NBA 2K13″ was released yesterday, and already the game has gotten massive praise for its realism, attention to detail and expansive new player moves.

We did a post last month trying to rank where the Pistons’ players would land in terms of rating; while the game has yet to include several second-round draft picks and some signings, several of the picks were spot-on and others were slightly off. Apparently there will be roster updates to come, but as of now, there appear to be the first official ratings.

Like I mentioned above, the second-round picks (Kyle Singler, Kim English, Khris Middleton) and recent signings (Slava Kravtsov) are still to be added, so projecting their stats is somewhat difficult.

Certain players, like Daye and Villanueva, didn’t get rated as poorly as I imagined, especially after their disappointing 2011-12 campaigns. That’s something that could be reflected in the next updates, though.

While rookie ratings are usually low, Drummond’s is especially surprising. The number 1 pick, Anthony Davis, is rated an 80, yet some consider Drummond to be the second-best player in this year’s draft. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (77 overall) is considered a solid defender, but probably lacks a substantial offensive game to match. Perhaps most egregious is Toronto’s Terrence Ross – considered a stretch at number 8 – who was rated a 71. Yes, the former UConn big man is a project, but he certainly has more untapped potential than a 6’6” small forward.

Once the season moves on, it’ll be interesting to see how the ratings change. How much will Detroit’s roster fluctuate?

Just days before the release of their latest NBA game, amid glowing reviews of NBA 2K13, 2K Sports got even better news: EA Sports was halting production of the their own 2013 game and pulling out of this year’s basketball simulator market once again.

In a blog post on the NBA Live 13 official site, EA Sports’ executive vice president Andrew Wilson wrote the following:

“Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it’s clear that we won’t be ready in October. Rather than launch midway through the season, we’re going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great. This decision puts us on the right track for success well into the future in a rapidly changing industry.”

For a company that has had to cancel the NBA Live series for two years running, this is another huge blow. Granted, they still have exclusive rights to Madden and the NFL in general, but the success of the 2K series in recent years is enough to warrant concern from EA’s side.

After problems transitioning to the newest generation of consoles (Xbox 360 and Playstation 3), EA attempted to remake their flagship basketball franchise with NBA Elite 11, but that was canceled just a few weeks before it’s scheduled release because of severe technical issues. Even after showing off demos of the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June, Live 13suffered from a lack of progress.

With 2K Sports now having a three-year run of being the only basketball game for consoles, and stars like Jay-Z and Michael Jordan attached to their product, it’ll probably take quite a bit from EA’s 2014 edition to unseat them from the top of the virtual basketball world.
