]]> Word association time: When I say “With the eighth pick in the 2011 NBA draft, the Detroit Pistons select _____” you say … what? Project? Boom or Bust? Marginal? Bench player? Who cares? Look, everyone knew this year’s NBA draft was bad, but there is a certain amount of a gut punch reaction to have the Pistons, sitting in the seventh slot with little chance to land in the top three see the team just below them in the odds (Utah) and just above them (Cleveland) both strike it rich. And I am certainly not a Dumars basher when it comes to his drafting acumen. And I’m certainly not gun shy about picking someone that goes against conventional wisdom or is overseas and has a name that is hard to pronounce. But damn if Drew Sharp doesn’t get it exactly right in his latest column:

At No. 8, the Pistons might be stuck rolling the dice on an international big man whose name immediately will translate into “Darko” around Michigan.

As excited as I am that the rebuilding of the Pistons can finally begin once a Tom Gores officially becomes owner, last night’s lottery developments did the team no favors.
