Joe Dumars has finally come through for Piston fans all across the great state of “Meeeechigan.” Our GM  has locked up the third best free agent in this year’s class, Josh Smith (behind Howard and Paul), to a 4-year deal worth approximately $54 million dollars. Y! Sports was first to report the deal between the two, as the Pistons make their first mark on the 2013 Free Agent class.

Josh Smith is a 6’9″ tweener, who can plays both the power forward as well as the small forward position. He played primarily power forward during his career with Atlanta. But in Detroit, he will play the small forward spot with a stacked frontcourt that includes Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.

Barring any potential moves involving Greg Monroe, Josh Smith will be the Detroit Pistons starter at  small forward  on opening night.

Smith played nine seasons with the Hawks after being drafted straight out of high school. He averaged over 17 points, over 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks a game. Smith was a highly coveted free agent forward, and the Pistons-against the odds-signed one of the best free agents on the market.

This signing does come with a numerous amount of negative feedback though. People are saying there will not be enough spacing for a Monroe-Drummond-Smith frontcourt, but I do not agree with that completely. Yes, Smith needs to work on his outside shooting, but he is an above average shot blocker/defender that can help against defending the more athletic teams in the NBA. He also has the ball handling ability to play the small forward spot.

With an improved perimeter jump shot, the Pistons will have one of the most talented frontcourts in the entire NBA. Things are looking bright for Piston fans, and the NBA Playoffs are just around the corner.
