Remember when today was supposed to be the magical day that this crazy ordeal was finally finished. Today, Russian Culture Night in New Jersey, was supposed to be a landmark moment for the franchise. Billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov was supposed to be in attendance and he would make the big announcement to an arena full of adoring fans.
It could still happen, but it’s not looking very likely. The megatrade that would send Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton to the Nets, Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Anthony Morrow and a slew of first-round draft picks to the Nuggets and Troy Murphy, Johan Petro and a second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons has been in a holding pattern for weeks.
In the past several days the featured piece, Carmelo Anthony, has played coy about whether he was scheduled to, or even would entertain a meeting with the Nets brass. But there is good news! According to a source that spoke to the Associated Press, Anthony is ready and willing to sign a three-year $65 million extension with the Nets. The bad news is that Denver and New Jersey are STILL haggling over the price to be paid for Anthony.
Here is the relevant excerpt from the AP story:
A person with knowledge of the proposed Carmelo Anthony trade says the holdup is over the framework of the deal, not the All-Star forward’s willingness to commit to New Jersey.

The person added that the Nets are not concerned about Anthony’s commitment to the franchise for the long term should the trade be completed, saying they are convinced the 26-year-old will sign a $65 million, three-year contract extension if New Jersey, Denver and Detroit can agree on the others parts of the deal.
Only 36 days until the trade deadline and this saga will be officially settled. But let’s hope Russian Culture Night has a big surprise in store.
